Last minute Erice wonder goal settles epic encounter
Real Oviedo came out on top in an enthralling game at the Carlos Tartiere. A superb last minute strike from substitute Jon Erice proving to be the match winner. This also means its three wins on the trot for Oviedo and 5 wins from the last six games.
There was one change from last week’s starting line up at Mirandes with Lucas Torro starting in place of Jonathan Vila.
It was the visitors who started this game the brighter but were restricted to long-range efforts from Buendia and Gorosito that were both off target in the first quarter of an hour.
It was Oviedo who took the lead though with their first attack on 17 minutes. Susaeta picked the ball up, beat his man and played a delicious ball through for Toche who finished into the far corner via the help of the post. It was a great goal and just what the Oviedo faithful wanted. It seemed to kick start the game into life also. Rocha fired just over from the edge the box after good work by Saul on 23 minutes.
Hearts were in mouths 2 minutes later when Getafe won a free kick on the edge of the box and Damian curled it within a cigarette paper of the top corner. Getafe's best chance of the half came on 42 minutes when Chuli made a great run into the box picking up a through ball and did everything right with the shot firing it low across goal but Juan Carlos was equal to it with a fine save. Oviedo nearly doubled their lead on the stroke of half time but a fine free kick routine ended up with Christian heading over a Saul centre.
The second half started with a hammer blow as Getafe equalised within 2 minutes of the re-start. Alvaro whipped in a low cross and there was Chuli to sweep home into the bottom corner from the penalty spot to draw the visitors level. Getafe really threatened to get on top after this as they piled forward but Oviedo stood firm. The game was becoming more and more open as both teams were not settling for the draw. Toche fired wide after superb work down the left from Saul. Within 3 minutes Getafe carved out another great chance and again it was that man Chuli firing wide another Alvaro cross. The game was end to end. It really was an intense encounter you could not take your eyes off. The longer and longer the game went on it felt like it was more and more on a knife-edge. Oviedo had claims for a penalty when Torro appeared to be wrestled to the ground but it would have been harsh on the visitors. What wouldn’t have been harsh would have been Cata Diaz getting a red card when he forearm smashed Nando to crudely stop a counter attack. Fortunately for the robust defender the referee produced a yellow card.
Just as it seemed the game was up and both teams had to settle for a draw a moment of magic decided the game at the death. A Susaeta’s free kick was only half cleared by Getafe and it fell to Jon Erice who took a touch and unleashed a 25 yards thunderbolt into the top corner to send the Carlos Tartiere crowd into delirium. It really was a superb strike and such was the brilliance of this match it deserved to be settled by a touch of magic. Make no doubts about it, this is a huge victory for Real Oviedo against a very good Getafe side and on today’s performance they are arguably the best side to visit the Carlos Tartiere this season.
This win cements Real Oviedo's play off place and next week we face a tricky away game as we travel to Reus on Friday night looking to gain revenge for their win in Asturias earlier in the season.
