Valladolid 2 Real Oviedo 3

Oviedo win thrilling contest

Real Oviedo returned from the Estadio Jose Zorrilla with all three points after a magnificent win in a pulsating contest

Linares, Toche and Susaeta were the goal scorers as Oviedo picked up their second away win of the season with a 3-2 success.

Coach Sergio Egea once again shuffled his pack as he made three changes from last weeks draw against Mallorca. In came Jonathan Vila, Nacho Lopez and Linares who was back after illness. Out went Aguirre, Fernandez and Edu Bedia.

The game got off to a frantic start and this didn’t let up the entire 90 minutes.

It was clear from the off that Oviedo were not here for a draw. Just 3 minutes gone when Susaeta fired the first effort goal wards but his effort was straight at Julio. Toche who kept his place in the side after an impressive performance last week was next to test out Julio but his effort was well saved by the keeper’s legs. The goal was coming though and it duly arrived on 13 minutes when Carlos Pena played a pass through the home defence for Linares and the striker made no mistake from near the penalty spot to slot expertly passed the over worked keeper.

Unfortunately Oviedo couldn’t hold the lead and just 90 seconds later the home side equalised. A corner was half cleared to Alvaro Rubio who lobbed a ball over Oviedo's defence to Villar, he chested down and volleyed past Esteban. The madness didn’t end there, as no sooner had the home side finished celebrating Oviedo re-took the lead. It was another well-worked goal. Susaeta floated a free kick to the far post for David Fernandez to head back across goal for Toche to nod home inside the six-yard box for his second league goal of the season. It was breathless stuff as the contest ebbed and flowed. Both teams were carving out chances for fun. Del Moral and Angel both going close for the home side and Linares and Jonathan Vila with chances for Oviedo but somehow the score line remained 2-1 at the half time break.

The second half started in the same vein with the whirlwind pace being shown. In fact it was just two minutes old when Hervias almost made it 3 for Oviedo after cutting inside from the left but his effort was deflected inches over the crossbar. Valladolid striker Rodri attempted a bicycle kick moments later but Jonathan Vila managed to get block in to divert the danger. It really was end to end stuff though and you could sense the scoring was far from over. Toche had another chance when he slid in to get on the end of another Hervias cross but the defender did enough and Toche couldn’t keep his effort on target.

Valladolid then equalised on 61 minutes with another good goal. Moyano whipped in a teasing low cross in between the defence and Esteban to the far post and Angel slid into convert below the keeper and make it 2-2. Both sides now sensed the three points were there for the taking. On 73 minutes Oviedo thought they had re-taken the lead when Aguirre tricked his way into the box down the goal line and pulled the ball back for Toche but his effort came back off the bar to substitute Kone who headed goal wards for what looked like his first goal in the blue colours but his effort hit Toche on the side of the face and Valladolid somehow cleared the danger. It was an incredible passage of play that left people scratching their heads as to how it hadn’t ended up in a goal. Moments later and Toche went close again but this time his effort was cleared off the line by a Valladolid player. You got the feeling it was going to take something special to decide this match and who better than to provide a moment of inspiration than Nestor Susaeta. He picked the ball up 35 yards from goal, Ran 5 yards beating his man before unleashing a wonderful low drive that flew beyond Julio and into the bottom corner to send the 3000 travelling Carbayones wild.

Two minutes later and the drama wasn’t over. Linares picked up his second yellow card despite being substituted. It appeared he had said something from the bench that the 4th official had taken exception too. Valladolid didn’t give up though and were looking for the equaliser and despite Del Moral shooting wide in the last minute Oviedo held firm for a fantastic win.

It was a thoroughly entertaining afternoon of football in a game that had everything. In fact the most amazing thing about the game was the fact there were only 5 goals, there could have easily been double that. Next week we return to the Carlos Tartiere to try to record our second home win when Alcorcon are the visitors. We do of course have a midweek cup match on Wednesdy night against Mirandes that is also at the Carlos Tartiere.

Hala Oviedo
