Oviedo pick up second home win
Real Oviedo produced another thrilling performance to pick up their second home win of the season and make it back to back league wins after last weeks triumph in Valladolid.
Just like last week the final score was 3-2 with Toche on the score sheet again as he grabbed two and El Requexon product Christian Rivera grabbing the other with his first goal for the club.
Coach Egea made just one change to the line up from last week with Linares suspended meant a first start for Kone.
The game started in frantic fashion with neither side able to get into a rhythm for the opening 10 minutes until with the first real action of the game Oviedo took the lead. Ironically it was an action replay of the goal that cruelly knocked us out of the cup on Wednesday except there was no offside controversy on this occasion. Susaeta let fly from 25 yards and a combination of Dmitrovic in the Alcorcon goal and the post kept the ball out and there was Toche first to react and tuck the rebound under the keeper for the opening goal.
Like most games recently there wasn’t a shortage of action and five minutes later the visitors went close when Campana let fly from 25 yards but his effort went inches wide of the top corner. On the half hour mark Susaeta had a let off after he under hit a back pass but thankfully Esteban narrowed the angle and David could only shoot wide. Esteban was called into action twice more before the interval expertly tipping Oscar Plano's drive over the bar and again denying David from close range after Nelson's right side delivery. The veteran goalkeeper was in fine form.
Two minutes into the second half and Oviedo went close to doubling their lead when Susaeta whipped in a cross and Toche met with a diving header but his effort went agonisingly wide of the far post. The visitors were enjoying a lot of possession in the second half but it was Oviedo who were creating the chances. Hervias tested out Dmitrovic but his 20-yard effort was well saved by the Serbian keeper who is on loan from Charlton Athletic.
He was called in to action moments later saving well with his legs from Toche's effort after good work down the left from Hervias.
Toche wasn’t to be denied though and he grabbed his & Oviedo's second moments later volleying home from six yards from Kone's inch perfect centre.
As the game appeared to be drifting towards an uneventful conclusion Alcorcon suddenly pulled a goal back when Roman powered in a header from a free kick to reduce the deficit.
Two minutes later and the same player had a golden chance to complete a comeback when a corner was half cleared. The ball was played back into the area, which caused mayhem in the box, and Roman met the loose ball but saw his powerful effort come back off the crossbar.
This was a big let off for Los Carbayones and five minutes later we regained our two-goal advantage. Susaeta once again involved when after his initial free kick was blocked his second attempt into the penalty area was perfectly met by Christian Rivera who hit a superb shot into the bottom corner from near the penalty shot. It was superb technique by the youngster and his first goal for the club.
David finally got on the score sheet with the final touch of the game converting from the goal line after a scramble to pull the score back to the 3-2. The referee whistled immediately after to bring the game to its conclusion and three valuable points for Oviedo against tough opposition.
The downside to today’s result is the injuries to Nacho Lopez and Hector Verdes. Hopefully they are not serious.
Next week we are back on the road with a trip to Ponferradina.
Hala Oviedo!
