Elche 0 Real Oviedo 2

Oviedo miss out on the play offs

Real Oviedo did their job and produced a comfortable victory at already relegated Elche but wins for Huesca and Valladolid denied Los Carbayones a play off spot so its second division football again next season.

Hopes were raised on a roller coaster final day as at one point Oviedo just needed a Cadiz goal with Huesca losing but it wasn’t to be as Huesca fought back to win 2-1 at ten man champions Levante and Cadiz eventually lost 1-0 at Valladolid thanks to a late strike.

Fernando made one change to the line up from last weeks win with David Rocha replacing Jon Erice as off the pitch rumours rumble on about the club captain.

In an open start to the game both sides created half chances with Susaeta and Toche having efforts for Oviedo and a former Oviedo player in Pablo Hervias firing an effort wide for the hosts.

The best chance of the opening period fell to Linares after he was played in by Saul Berjon but he fired his effort straight at German in the Elche goal. The open feel to the game continued in a game that was played in virtually an empty stadium as the home fans chose to stay away. The ones that did attend were making their voices heard with chants against the board, not to mention whistling and booing their own players in possession. Iriondo fired a decent chance over the bar after good work by Fabian and Berjon curled an effort straight at German but the score at half time remained goalless.

Toche was the first to go close after the break and it was a good chance. Saul Berjon crossed but Toche could only head over. On the hour mark Toche had another good chance and again it came from a Berjon cross but this time it was Toche's chest control that let him down as it allowed German to narrow the angle and save well.

The Oviedo top scorer wasn’t to be denied a third time though as Susaeta produced some wonderful wing play beating his man and delivering an inch perfect cross for Toche to rise and power home a header from 6-yards. It was a wonderful goal as Oviedo's most influential players combined. Susaeta's assists and Toche's goals have become trademark over the last few years.

On 74 minutes Oviedo made it 2-0 and this time it was Nando who scored with a fine right foot finish after a neat one-two with Linares. This made the game safe and eyes turned elsewhere to see the results of other fixtures.

Elche looked a beaten team and their only effort of the second half was tame effort from Malonga on 86 minutes.

Lucas Torro had a great chance to make it 3-0 in stoppage time but his effort from a Rocha corner came off his shin and trickled wide.

The game finished and we have already accepted our fate that we will play at this level again next season.

Elsewhere in the division all other matters have been resolved. Levante have gone up as champions and Girona have joined them as they have been promoted to La liga for the first time in their history.

Meanwhile down at the bottom the four teams to go down are Mirandes, Elche, Mallorca and UCAM Murcia.

The play offs are also decided, as the semi-final line-ups are Huesca v Getafe and Cadiz v Tenerife.

The three teams to come down from La liga are Granada, Osasuna and of course our local rivals Sporting Gijon so we will have a first derby since 2002 to look forward to.

Coming up from Segunda B so far are La Hoya Lorca and Segunda B champions Cultural Leonesa. The other two spots are yet to be decided as the long play off process is still in full swing.

Hala Oviedo!
