Another away defeat for Oviedo
Real Oviedo who were backed by over 3,000 travelling fans slipped to another defeat on the road to hamper their play off hopes. This was Real Oviedo's tenth away defeat out of seventeen away matches but thanks to our superb home form we remain in the top six.
Once again Fernando Hierro made two changes to the starting line up with Varela and Borja coming in to replace Christian Fernandez and Miguel Linares.
Things started well for Oviedo as we took the lead after 7 minutes. David Costas floated a long free kick forward which was flicked on by Saul Berjon to Toche, who lashed home left footed in at the near post. It was a great finish and start to the match.
This was unfortunately as good as it got for Oviedo though as Lugo were on level terms just before half time. Vico nodded down a ball into the box and there was Joselu to side foot home beyond Juan Carlos.
On the hour mark the turnaround was complete and the home side got the all-important winning goal. Joselu latched onto a through ball and prodded it past Juan Carlos. David Fernandez running back to the goal couldn’t keep it out and the ball trickled into the far corner.
Elsewhere in the Segunda division some of our rivals met each other in big games over the weekend. Huesca were held 1-1 at home by Cadiz with the visitors equalising with the last kick of the game thanks to their top scorer Ortuno. The biggest game of the weekend came in the Canary Islands where second placed Girona travelled to Tenerife. Despite leading 2-0 Girona had to settle for a 3-3 draw in a thrilling match. In Saturdays other games Gimnastic thrashed lowly Mirandes 4-1 and Numancia picked up a fine 3-1 away win at Elche.
Onto Sunday’s games and the main one that affects Oviedo came in a Madrid derby where Getafe won 3-0 at near neighbours Alcorcon. The most eye opening result came in Seville as Sevilla B hammered Valladolid 6-2 and were indeed 4-0 up at half time mainly thanks to a hat trick by Marc Gual - maybe our 5-3 defeat there wasn’t so bad after all! Bottom side Mallorca lost again, this time 1-0 away at Zaragoza. Cordoba won a relegation six-pointer at home to Almeria by the solitary goal and Rayo continued there good form with a 1-0 away win at UCAM Murcia to pull further away from the dreaded relegations places. Finally onto Monday nights game which wasn’t worth the wait in truth as Reus held runaways leaders Levante to a goalless draw.
Our next game is a huge one as we now lie in sixth place in the table and welcome seventh place Huesca to the Carlos Tartiere on Friday night.
