Tenerife 1 Real Oviedo 0

Controversy in the Canaries

A good Real Oviedo performance was in vain after an outrageous penalty decision in Tenerife. To add insult to injury it was former Oviedo player Aitor Sanz who stuck away the decisive spot kick.

Fernando Hierro had made two changes to the starting line up from last weeks superb supporters day victory over Girona. Fernandez and David Rocha came in to replace Diegui and Linares.

Both sides went into this clash on 49 points and the opportunity was there to put more pressure on Girona who lost again yesterday and trim the gap between 2nd and the rest of the pack to 6 points.

The game started as expectedly in even fashion and there was little between the sides until the controversial penatly decision on 17 minutes. Its hard to even know exactly what it was for as there was no claims by any of the home players but it seems the ref gave it for the slightist contact from Jon Erice on Sanz. The former Oviedo captain beat Juan Carlos from the spot although the keeper got a hand to it and was unlucky not to keep it out.

It clearly incensed the Oviedo players who rightly felt an injustice. It was a diabolical decision in truth. The response from Oviedo was good as they took control of the game. On 20 minutes, Susaeta curled a free kick close but Dani Hernandez in the Tenerife goal tipped it over. The same two combined again just before the half hour mark when Susaeta's left footed effort was well saved. The best chance of the game came just on the stroke of half time but Torro's header from a Nando centre lacked any venom and was tipped onto the bar and away to safety from the Venezualan goalkeeper. In truth the on loan Real Madrid man should have levelled for Oviedo.

The second half continued as the first with the visitors creating the clearer openings. A double chance came on 57 minutes when one Fernandez crossed for another and Christian Fernandez header was cleared off the line by Carlos Ruiz. Toche headed the follow up wide. Oveido were playing well in what was a much improved away performace. Toche went close again on 70 minutes but once again Dani Hernandez came to the rescue for the home side. There was one final chance with 3 minutes left on the clock and again it was Lucas Torro heading goalwards and this time the keeper was beaten but there frustratingly was a defender on the line to heroically clear the danger. It just wasn't to be Oviedo's day. We can be very proud of what was a good performance against very good opposition. With a bit more composure in front of goal and a howler from the referee we would have won this game. Next week we return to home action when we welcome UCAM Murcia to the Carlos Tartiere
