Oviedo defeated in the Capital
Real Oviedo slipped to a disappointing defeat in Madrid as they went down 2-0 to bottom club Rayo Vallecano. A goal in each half did the damage against toothless Oviedo.
Fernando Hierro prepared for his second successive away game by making three changes from last weeks draw at Numancia. Michu, Linares and Varela came in to replace Toche, Jon Erice and Christian.
As expected the under pressure home side came out of the blocks quickly and showed their intent from minute one. The impressive Alex Moreno who proved to be a menace all night fizzed in an early cross and Javi Guerra wasn’t far from connecting.
The home side went even closer with just 7 minutes on the clock when German Patrick Ebert went on a weaving run into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful drive across goal but the post came to Oviedo's rescue on this occasion.
This was however just a temporary reprieve as the home side did take the lead on 12 minutes. A clumsy challenge by Johanneson upended Moreno in the area and Ebert showed nerves of steel as he lashed home the spot kick.
The game was 25 minutes old before Oviedo's first meaningful effort and it came from Susaeta but his 25-yard drive was just over the bar.
Oviedo were failing to create chances and the closest they came was from a rare venture forward from Johanneson but his cross evaded Michu and Linares and the danger was over for the home side.
In fact Oviedo were lucky it was only 1-0 at the break as Javi Guerra nearly made it two but his header from Ebert's cross was straight at Juan Carlos.
On the hour mark though the home side did double their lead and it came from former Cardiff City man Guerra. He poked home from close range after Juan Carlos had kept out Embarba's effort.
Real Oviedo it would be fair to say just never got going in this game and it took until 86 minutes before we actually created our only decent chance in the entire game and that came from substitute Jonathan Periera but he couldn’t score against his old club as his effort hit the side netting. Rayo had comfortably seen the game out and in stoppage time nearly added a third when another familiar name Jordi Gomez struck a free kick but his effort went just wide and the game finished 2-0.
It was a much needed victory for the home side but as for Oviedo it was a disappointing day at the office and a vast improvement will be needed next weekend as we welcome Girona to the Carlos Tartiere for the clubs 91st anniversary celebrations.
