Oviedo back in play off hunt after victory

Real Oviedo are back in the play off hunt thanks to getting their first win in eight games and also the failure to win of both Huesca and Valladolid. We must win our final game away at relegated Elche and hope that Huesca and Valladolid both lose. It’s a long shot but we have the easier fixture.

Hierro made two changed to last weeks line up with Saul Berjon and Linares replacing Carlos de Pena and Nando.

It was Linares who had the first two chances of the game but he missed both in what turned out to be a frustrating evening for the veteran striker. First he dragged a decent chance wide before volleying over a much more difficult chance from Jon Erice's long ball.

On 36 minutes however we took the lead. Susaeta as usual was the provider. He curled a free kick to the far post and there was Christian Fernandez who volleyed home from a tight angle over Ondoa in the visiting goal. In all truth it looked like a cross but no one cared and we were in front.

Into the second half and Saul Berjon tested Ondoa out within a minute with a curling effort from 25 yards but the keeper held well. Linares had another chance just before the hour mark but once again his effort was off target.

Moments later and Juan Carlos was called into action for the first time saving from a Cotan effort after the defender found himself unmarked.

The visitors went even closer to equalising on 67 minutes when Marc Gual curled an effort just wide of the post. It was a great chance and he should have hit the target in truth.

Linares was to have one more chance before being substituted but his tame effort was straight at Ondoa

With time running out Cotan called Juan Carlos into action again but thankfully for Oviedo he was equal to it. Nando had a final effort for Oviedo in the last minute but his effort went just wide and the final whistle sounded much to the relief of the home fans.

As mentioned earlier we travel to face Elche in our final game of the season hoping that Cadiz can win in Valladolid and Huesca lose at champions Levante to extend our season into the play offs.

Hala Oviedo!
