Sevilla B 5 Real Oviedo 3

Defensive errors again Oviedo's worst enemy

Real Oviedo slipped to a miserable defeat at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan as defensive errors once again were Oviedo's undoing. The score line could have been even worse had it not been for two late consolation goals by the visitors.

The game kicked off in an eerily empty stadium as fans were only in one section of the ground and these were out of view from the cameras so it looked like the ground was empty.

New winter signing Saul Berjon had to do with a place on the bench as Hierro surprisingly recalled Nando & Ortiz. Hector Verdes also returned from suspension but I’d guess at full time he probably wished he was still suspended after having an afternoon to forget. He wasn’t alone to be fair!

The hosts took the lead in controversial circumstances when the referee awarded a penalty after an alleged foul by Fernandez on Matos. Ivi tucked the spot kick away to Juan Carlos right hand side. On the half hour mark it was 2-0. There was no controversy in this one. A low harmless cross from the right hand side was deflected into his own net by Verdes. The ball seemed to go into slow motion as it trickled beyond Juan Carlos who surely should have done better. The Oviedo keeper was another one having a game to forget. He nearly gifted Sevilla B a goal a few minutes later but his dreadful clearance was not punished by the home side. It was one-way traffic though and the home sides third goal was only a matter of time. It duly arrived on 38 minutes when Emeterio volley home unmarked from close range. Real Oviedo really were all over the place defensively and it’s hard to remember a worse 45 minutes.

It’s hard to imagine Hierro was anything other than seething at half time and he made a double substitution at the break with Toche and Berjon coming on to replace Ortiz and David Rocha.

Oviedo showed far more urgency in the second half and Toche went close to pulling one back with two good chances but he failed to take them and the game looked to be drifting to a dull conclusion only for the last 15 minutes to explode with five goals.

First Real Oviedo were awarded a penalty when Christian was tugged over in the area from a corner. Toche made it third time lucky as he finally took his chance.

Any hopes of a come back were dashed 60 seconds later as more defensive woe led to David Carmona having a free shot in front of goal from 6 yards. The defending was beyond belief and you thought it surely couldn’t get any worse. Wrong! 5 minutes later and Hector Verdes rounded off his miserable afternoon after dallying on the ball allowing Pozo a free run at goal and he duly finished to make it 5-1. It really was beyond belief what you were watching by now.

Toche and Linares both managed to get on the score sheet in the last five minutes to give the score line a bit more respectability. The final whistle sounded to round off a horrid evening for Los Carbayones. It was strange game as although we were 3-0 down you felt if we had scored our first goal early in the second half we may have even got back into the game as Sevilla B seemed to panic after we scored. We can in truth have no complaints though as defending like we produced will only have one outcome.

We now have two consecutive home games as we welcome Elche and Real Valladolid to the Carlos Tartiere for two massive games to get our promotion hopes back on track.
