Real Oviedo crowned champions
Kings of Segunda B
Real Oviedo were crowned champions of Segunda B after an
excellent performance at the Carlos Tartiere as they swept aside Gimnastic 3-0
in the second leg of the championship final.
Sergio Egea as expected made changes to the line up from
Sunday, there were five in total as in came Esteban, David Fernandez, Susaeta,
Linares and JonathanVila to replace Gorka, Charlie, Sergio Garcia, Diego
Cervero and Allyson.
The game got off to a frantic start with a very high paced
tempo and Oviedo were rewarded for this positive start with just 10 minutes on
the clock. Good play down the left hand side from Dioni result in a perfect
ball across the 6 yard box for Linares to tap home. It was an excellent team
goal that typified the play we have seen this season, great decisive, accurate
passing with an end product. The game was open however and Nastic were creating
chances of their own. Striker Azkorra got on the end of a right wing cross but
his header was saved by Esteban who had positioned himself superbly. Midway
through the first half Nastic left back Mossa went on a fine run down the left
before whipping a teasing ball across the 6 yard box but Rayco coming in from
the far side couldn’t quite reach.
On 43 minutes Susaeta tried his luck from 25 yards but his
swerving dipping effort was saved well by Tomeu in the visiting goal. There was
still time for one more Oviedo chance before the interval when Linares met
Suaaeta’s right wing corner but his header was straight at Tomeu.
Oviedo stepped up the game even more after the break and
began to really dominate. Dioni, similar to Nastic’s move in the first half
fizzed a ball across the 6 yard box but this time it was Valle who couldn’t
quite get on the end of it.
Oviedo were really piling on the pressure though and were
duly rewarded with a second goal on 55 minutes. Linares latched onto a through
ball before superbly cutting inside his man Xavi Molina and right footed curled
a fine finish into the bottom left hand corner. A wonderful goal by a player
who has simply had a wonderful season.
Gimnastic came out as an attacking side more after this
though as they sought a goal to get themselves back in the tie. They did
however despite the extra possession, more positive approach and winning
several set pieces, only really create one clear chance. This came on 77
minutes when Pol Bueso flicked on a corner for substitute Marcos but he
volleyed into the side netting.
With ten minutes to go Sergio Egea decided to replace
Linares with Diego Cervero and the stadium gave both players the standing
ovation they deserved. With the game still in the balance it was left to one
man to fire the third goal and put the game beyond the visitors and that man
was of course Diego Cervero. Dioni picked him out inside the penalty area and
after feigning to shoot once he fired in a perfect low shot into the bottom
corner on 84 minutes to seal the tie for Oviedo. It was a wonderful strike and
the stuff of fairytales.
If ever a script could be produced then this was it. A
perfect end to a perfect season for Real Oviedo as they were crowned Champions
of Segunda B, the best out of 80 teams at this level. A fine achivement.
Whilst the players and fans can go and have a well earned
rest for a few weeks you can be rest assured that Sergio Egea and co will be
already planning towards next season as a busy summer lies ahead for our next
challenge – Liga Adelante.
