Late goal downs Oviedo
Real Oviedo slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat in Soria after a late goal from Alex Alegria was enough for Numancia.
Sergio Egea made just one change from last weeks draw at home to Bilbao Athletic with Kone coming in for Linares.
Despite the home side making the brighter start and forcing a succession of early corners it was Oviedo who created the first chance of the game on 20 minutes.
Carlos Pena fed the ball to Susaeta down the left and he whipped in lovely low cross for Toche to slide in from inside the 6-yard box but unfortunately he couldn’t keep his effort down and it flew over the bar.
As the half went on Numancia started to take control of the game and just before the half hour Pablo Valcarce hit the post after he met Concha's right wing centre. A couple of minutes later and the same Valcarce brother went close again, this time with his head forcing Esteban into the first of a series of fantastic saves.
Toche had another chance with a spectacular overhead kick in first half stoppage time but his effort was straight at Munir in the home goal, so the score at half time was goalless.
Ten minutes in the second half and Esteban was called into action with a magnificent double save again denying Pablo Valcarce and Numancia captain Juanma. It was special stuff from the 40 year old.
Just after the hour mark and Esteban again came to the rescue keeping out Pedroza's drive from the edge of the box. The home side were sensing the three points and missed a glaring chance on 67 minutes when Oscar Diaz somehow headed wide from inside the 6-yard box.
Oviedo though were to create a golden chance of their own with 13 minutes left when two substitutes combined as Aguirre fired in a low cross from the left hand side for Linares from 6 yards but his effort hit the post and bounced to safety.
You had the feeling if there was to be a goal in this game it was either going to come from a mistake or something special and so it proved.
On 85 minutes a hopeful ball forward by the home side was miss-judged by Borja Gomez who tried to cushion his header back to Esteban but got his bearings wrong and the ball fell perfectly for Alex Alegria. He made no mistake as he rolled the ball past Esteban and into the net.
Oviedo had five minutes to try to grab an equaliser and went close through Susaeta whose long-range effort just cleared the bar but it wasn’t to be Oviedo's day.
Next week we will look to get back to winning ways when we face fellow promoted rival Gimnastic.
Hala Oviedo!
