Leganes 1 Real Oviedo 1

Oviedo battle back for a point

An own goal six minutes from time rescued a point for Los Carbayones after a spirited second half performance in Oviedo's first game of 2016.

Real Oviedo made one change to the line up from the Almeria game from before Xmas with Aguirre replacing Borja Valle who had been left out due to picking up an injury in that game. Diego Cervero, Linares, Omgba, Nacho Lopez and Dani Bautista were also unavailable.

This was Oviedo's first trip to Leganes since March 2013 and Oviedo were looking to improve on the 1-0 defeat that day.

In the outskirts of Madrid the game got underway in blustery conditions and the games first incident of any note was bad news for Oviedo and it came in the form of a nasty looking injury to Borja Gomez. He clashed knees with a Leganes player then his leg seemed to buckle from underneath him. Lets hope for good news during the week but first signs were that it looks like he may be out for at least a few weeks.

It was the home side who started the game better and Sastre was the first one to test Esteban from inside the area but the keeper made a smart save at his near post.

The away sides first attempt came on 27 minutes and it was almost a replay of the goal in Cadiz that won us promotion only this time Fernandez headed Susaeta's corner wide. In truth the home side were the better of the two teams and nearly took the lead on 35 minutes when Borja Lazaro headed a corner inches wide from 6 yards.

It was only a brief let off though as the home side did take the lead a minute later. Great play down the left from Gabriel and Soriano set up the impressive Szymanowski who slid in a low ball to the far post and there was Omar Ramos to tap home. It was a really well worked goal from the home side.

Real Oviedo had a golden chance to equalise just three minutes before the break when Kone slid in Toche who shot first time but Serantes managed to get a finger to the ball and tip it on to the post and the home side escaped.

Oviedo seemed to come out with more purpose in the second half and played with more urgency. Jon Erice had a snap shot from the edge of the area but his effort was well saved by Serantes. The home side were still a threat though and went close twice to doubling their lead through Martin and Szymanowski. Real Oviedo though stayed in the game, Fernandez headed another Susaeta corner wide and Hector Font lashed a wild effort over the bar after good work from Kone.

Then on 84 minutes Oviedo managed to find the equaliser. Toche's low ball across the box to Kone was diverted into his own net by the unlucky Insua and Oviedo had earned the point their second half performance deserved.

This is a good point away at a side just below the play off places. Next week we face a tough assignment as pre-season title favourites Real Zaragoza are in town.

Hala Oviedo!
