Real Oviedo 1 Real Zaragoza 0

Oviedo wins again

Real Oviedo kept up the pressure at the top of the Liga Adelante with a 1-0 victory over Real Zaragoza in the lunchtime kick off at the Carlos Tartiere.

Coach Sergio Egea was still without the services of Linares so once again it was Toche and Kone leading the line up front.

Oviedo were also without the injured Borja Gomez in defence so Hector Verdes stepped in to partner David Fernandez after recovering from his own injury. Otherwise it was the same team that drew at Leganes last week.

Oviedo started the game quickly without creating too many opportunities in the opening exchanges. Toche's ambitious effort from 35 yards which flew wide was the best of them. The first effort of any note came on 20 minutes when Susaeta's free kick was blocked by the wall and the rebound landed to Jon Erice. His left footed effort from the edge of the box was well saved by Bono in the Zaragoza goal. The keeper on loan from Atletico Madrid produced a fine stop in the bottom left hand corner. Bono was one of five loan players in the visitor’s starting line up.

The visitors were not threatening at all in an attacking sense and their only effort in the first half was a speculative attempt from 25 yards from Freddy Hinestroza which was in truth nearer to the corner flag than the goal.

The key moment came on 42 minutes when Susaeta made a bursting run up the pitch before laying the ball off to Kone, he in turn crossed in low for Toche and the striker made no mistake side footing home into the bottom corner. It was a fantastic goal and clearly the best moment of an otherwise quiet first half.

The second half started with as is often the case a higher tempo. Oveido were looking to double there lead. Hector Verdes headed over a Susaeta corner on 52 minutes before sub Borja Valle tried his luck from 25 yards but his low fizzing effort went narrowly the wrong side of the post.

Oviedo went closest yet to doubling their lead on 63 minutes and it was nearly an own goal. Kone's low ball into the box was diverted by Cabrera and looped over Bono but thankfully for the visitors it landed wide of the post. Bono and his troops lived to fight another day you could say.

A few minutes later and Valle spotted the keeper off his line and tried an audacious effort from the half way line but again the effort went wide. It was all Oviedo in terms of an attacking threat. Hervias had been bought on to run at a tiring defence and did just that on 77 minutes. He cut in from the right hand flank before unleashing a left footed effort that had Bono scrambling but he managed to save it. Bono was having a fine game and had it not been for Toche's earlier effort would have had a beautiful day.

Zaragoza finally managed an effort in stoppage time when Cabrera headed a corner wide but Oviedo held firm and picked up a deserved 3 points.

It was a very professional performance by Los Carbayones and proves we are a serious team in this division.

We remain in third place in the table after the top two Alaves & Cordoba both also won.

Next week promises to be a tricky match as we travel to Pamplona to face Osasuna.
Hala Oviedo!
