Girona 1 Real Oviedo 1

Oviedo stretch unbeaten run

Real Oviedo stretched their unbeaten run to eleven games mainly thanks to a strong defensive display from their long trip to the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi.

Sergio Egea made four changes from last week’s home victory over Tenerife. In came Jonathan Vila, Aguirre, Bedia and Jon Erice in place of Verdes, Borja Valle, Rivera and Kone.

Although some changes were enforced, Egea continuing to be a tinker man with his squad.

Girona flew out of the blocks and should have taken the lead inside the first 2 minutes. Cristian whipped in a low cross to the far post for Mata but the striker hit the post from point blank range. In honesty he really should have scored. The home side were on top throughout the first half but were limited to half chances after Mata's earlier chance. Granell fired just over from the edge of the box and Aday had an effort deflected into the side netting from just inside the box. As for Real Oviedo, they didn’t really create any chances in the opening half. Aguirre and Johannesson found themselves in good positions out wide but the final ball let them down and on both occasions the chance had gone.

Oviedo's first chance came on 52 minutes and it came from the head of Vila when he met a Susaeta free kick. Isaac Becerra producing a fine save to tip Vila's header round the post.

On 59 minutes Oviedo took the lead and it came from the penalty spot after Alcala trod on Edu Bedia's foot in the area. Susaeta stepped up and struck the ball into the top corner of the Girona net. It was the perfect penalty.

Girona like in the first half stepped up the pressure as they went in search of an equaliser. Esteban produced a fine save on 73 minutes when he tipped Aday's effort to safety. Despite Girona's pressure they were limited to half chances and you got the feeling it was going to take something special to breakdown a stubborn Oviedo defence. That is exactly what happened on 77 minutes. A clumsy tackle by Jon Erice led to a free kick for the home side. Up stepped Alcala to make up for his tackle to give away the penalty and thump a drive from fully 30 yards into the top corner. Esteban stood no chance as the home side celebrated. Both sides went in search of a winner but none was forthcoming and both sides had to settle for a point.

Next week sees us host Elche who are just a point outside the play off spots and just 4 points below ourselves.

Hala Oviedo!
