Defeat for Los Carbayones at San Mames
Real Oviedo slipped to their fourth defeat in five matches with a 2-1 defeat against their young Basque opponents.
Stand in coach David Generelo stuck with the same eleven that had brushed aside Ponferradina in last weekends 90th anniversary match.
Things started well for Oviedo as we grasped control of the match early and top scorer Toche had the first chance of the game when he headed Susaeta' right wing cross over the bar.
Toche made no mistake though a few minutes later when another chance presented itself to him. A long ball down field looked a routine defensive header for Yeray but he miss-placed it and the ball fell for Toche who happily gobbled up the chance to give the visitors the lead.
Midway through the first half and Oviedo nearly doubled their lead when Michel's effort was tipped over the bar after a superb pass from Toche.
Against the run of play though and the home side equalised on 36 minutes. Ager Iketxe whipped in a free kick and there was Oscar Gil unmarked to head beyond Mino. It was the home sides first attempt at goal. This seemed to give the home side confidence, as they were the better side for the remainder of the half.
Bilbao B were obviously buoyed by the closing stages of the first half as they came out attacking in the second half. Lopez had Mino scrambling with a 25-yard effort that went just wide and Mino was called upon to make a save when he tipped Aketxe's effort over after he had skinned David Fernandez.
Despite Michel going close with a header from a Susaeta cross you could sense the home side were going to score as they were the better side by now and that goal nearly came on 75 minutes when Villalibre wasted a golden chance when he hit the post from 8 yards after shrugging off 2 defenders. He really should have scored. They didn’t have to wait long though to take the lead as Seguin's effort found the net just 60 seconds later via a deflection off the back of Fernandez.
Things went from bad to worse on 83 minutes as Oviedo were reduced to 10 men as Hector Verdes received a 2nd yellow for handball.
Despite their numerical deficit the visitors calved out the best and only chance in the last few minutes and again it came from a Susaeta cross, Toche heading wide.
The whistle sounded and bought to an end a disappointing match for Real Oviedo. Bilbao B had grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck after their equaliser and you have to say deserved their victory. As for Oviedo it’s back to the drawing board with a home game against Numancia on Sunday.
Hala Oviedo!
