Compostela 1 Real Oviedo 1

Real Oviedo crowned league champions

Diego Cervero scores the decisive goal

Real Oviedo got the point they needed from their trip to Compostela thanks to a 1-1 draw meaning they were crowned champions of the Segunda B group 1 division.

As it turns out results elsewhere meant we would have been crowned champions had Diego Cervero not equalised but its much better to get the job done ourselves and decide our own destiny. Speaking of destiny it almost seemed inevitable that it would be Cervero who would get the goal after going so close to scoring a crucial equaliser last week.

Sergio Egea went into this match without three key plays as Susaeta and Dioni sat out through injury and Borja Valle was suspended so there were recalls for Sergio Garcia, Hector Font and Redondo who was playing in an unusual advanced position down the left hand side.

It promised to be a tough game and if it appeared tough before the game it was even tougher 30 seconds in, as we found ourselves a goal behind. A hopeful ball down Oviedo’s left was misjudged by left back Dani Bautista and there was Lemos to take full advantage by skipping into the box and beating Esteban at his near post. Esteban it seemed assumed Lemos was going to pull the ball back across goal so left some space at his near post but the Compostela winger finished expertly to give the home side a dream start. The game was open and both sides were creating chances in the early stages. Garcia had a chance to level on 5 minutes but his shot from Font’s pass lacked pace and was easy for Ramon in the home goal. Garcia had another chance mid way through the half from a quick counter attack and hit his shot much better this time but a diving Ramon kept it out with a smart save.

On 25 minutes came Oviedo’s best chance so far and it fell to top scorer Linares. Sergio Garcia got down the right hand side and pulled a low ball back across the six yard box and Charlie tried to back heel the ball but missed and the ball fell to Linares but his toe poke from six yards seemed to take a deflection and came back off the post and Charlie’s follow up shot was blocked. It was a bizarre sequence that left Oviedo fans scratching their heads as to how it hadn’t found the back of the net. Compostela were well in the game though and went close to doubling their lead just before the break but Araujo’s effort from the edge of the box went just wide.

Into the second half and Oviedo were continuing to attack and create chances although they were not as clear-cut in the early stages. Font went close to scoring his first for the club but his curling effort from just inside the area went wide. Redondo then teed up Linares from a swift counter attack but the ball seemed to get tangled up in the striker’s feet and the chance was gone. It was looking like one of those days in front of goal so Sergio Egea introduced Diego Cervero and the doc made an almost immediate impact as he grabbed the equalising goal 10 minutes from time. Omgba won a challenge and poked the ball towards the penalty box and the defenders clearance was blocked by Linares. The ball fell to Cervero who from just inside the penalty area curled home a fine finish that rolled back the years and sent the travelling fans and the Oviedo players into wild celebrations. It was no more than Oviedo deserved and how special it was that it was Cervero who was the one who grabbed the goal.

Oviedo had a scare in the last minute when Compostela sub Manu Rodriguez let fly from 25 yards but his low well-struck drive was excellently tipped away by Esteban. The full time whistle sounded to chants of “Campeones” ringing out loudly from the visiting Carbayones. Part one of the job was complete.

We now look forward to the end of season play off’s where hopefully we achieve the main goal of the season: promotion. We do have two fixtures left to play before the play off’s begin starting with our last home game of the regular season against Somozas next weekend.
