Real Oviedo went down 3-2 in an entertaining match at the
Campo de Vao against mid-table Coruxo. It was the last match of the regular
season and attention will now turn to Mondays play off draw to see who we face
over two legs as we play for promotion to the Segunda division.
Coach Sergio Egea named a strong starting line up which had
plenty of first team experience although it was far from what you would
describe as his first choice eleven. There was however a debut for U19 player
Christian Rivera.
It was Oviedo who took the lead on 25 minutes when Nestor
Susaeta struck home a penalty after the referee awarded a spot kick for
handball in the area.
Coruxo were on level terms though on 38 minutes when Rafa
Mella smashed in from close range after Oviedo failed to clear a corner
properly.
On the hour mark Coruxo took the lead with a well-worked
goal. Captain Antunez chipped the ball over the Oviedo defence for Ben to hook
back into the penalty box and there was striker Ruben Rivera to nod home and
make the score 2-1 to the home side. Oviedo were then given a lifeline just 2
minutes later when the home side were reduced to 10 men when Cifuentes picked
up his second yellow card.
Courxo however had other ideas and didn’t let their man
disadvantage put them off and they stretched their lead further on 67 minutes
albeit with a stroke of luck. Alberto Garcia’s long range free kick was blocked
and fell perfectly for Ben who from close range finished neatly passed Esteban
to make it 3-1.
Oviedo did pull a goal back in the last minute when
Susuata’s free kick into the area fell for Borja Valle and he slotted under
Fernando but it was too late to spark a comeback and the match ended Coruxo 3
Real Oviedo 2.
Coach Egea wont be too despondent about defeat though as the
real hard work starts now and on Monday we will find out who we will play in
the play offs. It will be one from either Cadiz who are group 4 winners,
Gimnastic who have won group 3 or the winner from group 2 which is still to be
decided with it being either Huesca or Bilbao B who ironically meet on the
final day for a title show down.
Who ever we draw it promises to be a tough tie over
two legs and it will be as much about holding your nerve as the type of
football played. We have proved over the season that we can play the superb
fast aggressive passing football as well as mixing it up and battling when
needed. This is why we must head into the play offs full of confidence we can
achieve our dream together.
