Real Oviedo secure final home win
Real Oviedo rounded off their home domestic league fixtures with a hard fought 2-1 win over Somozas after coming from a goal behind in front of just over 27,000 fans at the Carlos Tartiere.

with a hard fought 2-1 win over Somozas after coming from a goal behind in
front of just over 27,000 fans at the Carlos Tartiere. The fans were here in a
party mood to celebrate the league title.
Despite having won the league title last week coach Sergio
Egea named a very strong line as he looked to move into the play off’s with
momentum and not wanting to take his sides foot off the pedal.
Oviedo started the game on the front foot and were first to
threaten through chances inside the first ten minutes for Jon Erice and Linares
but neither player hit the target with their efforts. Somozas were not here to
join in the party though and were wanting to impress on the big stage. Heber
had their first effort on the twenty-minute mark but his left footed effort was
comfortable for Esteban.
Linares then had a golden chance for Oviedo after a great
through ball from Hector Font but Marc in the Somozas goal had read the
situation and came out well to save Linares effort. Oviedo were made to rue
this miss though and on 27 minutes the visitors took the lead. David Fernandez
made a mistimed challenge in the box and the visitors were awarded a spot kick.
Edgar stepped up and dispatched it perfectly into the top right hand corner.
Oviedo were not going to lie down though and let this set
back affect them as they continued to attack and create chances. Linares had
another chance, this time after Valle’s left wing cross. Top scorer Linares
deflected the header towards the bottom corner but Marc saved again. Oviedo
were pushing forward more and creating more as the half went on. Borja Valle
was next to go close after the visitors failed to clear a corner. His effort
went just over the bar, but Oviedo proved why they are champions as they kept
going and their patience finally paid off a minute before the interval. Hector
Font chipped a ball into the box which was only half cleared to the edge of the
box and there was Omgba to volley into the top corner for a sublime goal. It
was a fantastic finish and great technique from a player who we are now aware
has a wonder goal in his locker.
Amazingly we nearly went into the break ahead as there was
still time for Jonathan Vila to have an effort cleared off the line as Somozas
were eagerly wanting the half time whistle to sound so they could re-group.
The second half got under way and it was played at a more
pedestrian pace than the first half. It took until 15 minutes before a chance
of any note and it came from a free kick. Dani Bautista tried his luck from 25
yards but Marc was there again to avert the danger. Oviedo were still pressing
despite the rapid pace of the first half dying down a touch and midway through
the second half got their noses in front. Johannesson’s run led to the ball
being played to Bautista, whose effort was blocked only for the ball to fall to
Jon Erice who tucked the ball away with a neat finish from ten yards. It was
his first league goal of the season and well deserved after some impressive
displays recently.
The ground was in full party mood now with the fans in fine
voice. Somozas were doing their best to try and spoil the party though and
Stefan really should have equalised on 75 minutes but blazed his effort over
when well placed inside the penalty area. They were finishing the game the
stronger of the two sides and to their frustration had two goals ruled out for
offside. Further proof it was to be Oviedo’s day came in the final minute when
Alejandro nearly equalised but somehow volleyed wide from a free kick into the
box.
The full time whistle sounded and Oviedo had won again and
moved to 80 points for the season. The players did a lap of honour for the fans
knowing the next time we play at the Carlos Tartiere is for the ultimate prize:
