Real Oviedo 2 Tenerife 0

Unbeaten run continues

Real Oviedo made it back-to-back home wins as they stretched their unbeaten run to 5 games. This is also their third game without conceding a goal. This hard fought encounter was settled courtesy of a Linares goal in each half.

Hierro made 2 changes to last weeks goalless draw at Girona with Hector Verdes and Nestor Susaeta replacing Oscar Gil and Jon Erice.

David Rocha had the first effort of the game after good work down the right from Fernandez and Susaeta but Rocha curled his effort wide of the near post. In a good open start to the game the visitors looked a threat and Jouini dragged a decent chance wide from a throw in.

Both teams continued to attack and both were creating chances, Michu looking for his first goal back at the Carlos Tartiere since his return to the club tried his luck from 25 yards but Dani was equal to it in the Tenerife goal. Oviedo's vulnerability from set pieces reared its ugly head again on 25 minutes when defender German was unmarked from a corner but thankfully for Oviedo he headed wide.

Tenerife were made to pay for that 5 minutes later when Linares put Oviedo in front. The home side won possession in midfield and the ball broke to Toche. He played in Linares who fired home from the edge of the box.

This was the last goalmouth action of the half however the referee did have a weird moment just before half time as the game turned a little nasty. He booked 4 players in around 60 seconds as handbags were at the ready by both sets of players. There was nothing too serious and the dive and theatrics by Jouini in the penalty area were laughable.

Into the second half and Toche had a golden chance on 49 minutes but didn’t get enough power on his volleyed effort from 6 yards. Tenerife then probably had their best spell of the game as they put Oviedo under some real pressure and in truth only some poor finishing mainly from Lozano kept Oviedo's lead in tact. They were knocking on the door for a good 20-25 minutes calving out a few chances. Oviedo's next chance came on 75 minutes when Dani came to the rescue for the visitors thwarting Toche's attempt to round him. Substitute Amath was next to try for the visitors but Juan Carlos saved well from inside the area. Oviedo realised they needed another goal and Linares made it his mission to get that goal. On 85 minutes the striker hit the post from a tight angle after a scramble in the penalty area. He wasn’t to be denied though and grabbed the decisive second goal on 87 minutes when he latched onto a low cross from Varela, controlling well and slotting home to make the points safe. Oviedo nearly grabbed a third in stoppage time and again it came from a Varela cross but David Rocha's header was straight at Dani. That really would have been undeserved on a Tenerife side who contributed well to this game. It was an open game but very even between 2 good sides and Linares expert finishing was the main difference between the sides. Oviedo will hope for more of the same when we make our second trip of the season to face UCAM Murcia after our extra time loss there earlier in the season.
