UCAM Murcia 0 Real Oviedo 1

Smash and grab in Murcia

Real Oviedo came to Murcia and walked away with all 3 points after a laboured showing at the Estadio de la Condomina.

Fernando Hierro was without the services of Michu as the striker was nursing an injury keeping him out of this fixture. Michu has fond memories of this venue after scoring twice on his return debut to the club earlier in the season. Thankfully on this occasion we left Murcia victorious albeit in slightly fortunate circumstances.

The home side came out of the blocks and started the game well. Collantes had their first opportunity on 10 minutes after beating the onrushing Juan Carlos to a through ball and prodding goal wards. Fortunately for Oviedo Christian Fernandez was alert and got back to clear the danger. It was the home side doing all the attacking though and on 16 minutes they should have took the lead. David Fernandez played a sloppy pass to Gongora who was to have an eventful game. The UCAM player burst into the box and was upended by David Fernandez who was clearly eager to make up for giving the ball away but he was too late into the challenge and the ref had no option but to point to the spot. Up stepped Gongora and sent Juan Carlos the wrong way. Luckily for Oviedo his penalty went the wrong side of the post and Los Carbayones got out of jail. On 34 minutes Oviedo had their first attack of the game and won a corner. Susaeta whipped in the ball and there was Hector Verdes to head goal wards. The ball seemed to be going to the keeper hands but our friend from earlier Gongora was on hand to get his head to the ball and divert it passed his own keeper. It will probably go down as an own goal but as it was on target i would like to see Verdes get the credit. UCAM felt aggrieved, as the goal was against the run of play. Tito tried his luck a few moments later from 25 yards but Carlos got down to tip round the post.

Linares nearly had a good chance at the start of the second half after a high ball over the defence but his chest control let him down and the ball rolled out of play. Had the striker taken the ball down the goal was at his mercy.

It was the home side who were on top though as in the first half and only a Juan Carlos save with his feet denied Juanma after a great move by the home side. Incisive passing had breached a resolute Oviedo defence for the first time. UCAM seemed to run out of ideas though as the half went on and despite the majority of possession and pressure the chances seemed to dry up. They became more desperate and pushed more men forward. Substitute Pereira nearly punished them on the counter attack but was shoulder charged off the ball after rounding Fernando in the home goal, It was probably a fair challenge in truth but Oviedo wanted a foul and red card. UCAM plucked up the effort to have one final chance when Fran Perez glanced a header wide from a corner that would have had Oviedo hearts in mouths but Oviedo held firm and recorded a second away win of the season. It was also a fourth win from the last six games as we move up to fourth place in the table which is effectively third as Sevilla B sit in second but of course cannot get promoted. Next week we are back at the Carlos Tartiere when we face Lugo who have lost their last 3 games.
