Real Oviedo 0 Cultural 0

Real Oviedo held in stalemate

Real Oviedo fail to breakdown stubborn visitors

Real Oviedo were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at the Carlos Tartiere by a defence minded Cultural Leonesa. Despite having the majority of possession and the best chances, the home side could not break down the stubborn visitors. Cultural came for a 0-0 and got what they desired. Real Oviedo huffed and puffed and became more dominant as the game wore on but could not find a way through. Susaeta’s left footed strike bought out a great save from Tono and substitute Alain’s downward header straight at the keeper were as close as they came, as frustration echoed all around the Carlos Tartiere.
This result also probably ends any remaining hopes Los Carbayones had of finishing in 1st place this season as league leaders Racing Santander had won earlier in the day. Real Oviedo are now realistically playing to secure a top 4 spot and a place in the end of season play off’s. In fact the league seems to be playing out in a similar fashion to last season whereby the leaders are starting to pull away at the end as the other teams start to falter. Racing Ferrol are now the only team you feel who can challenge Racing Santander for top spot and even they are 5 points off the leaders.
The slightly worrying statistic is the fact we have now gone 2 games without scoring a goal. On the plus side though we have only conceded 1 goal in the last 3 matches, but as the saying goes – Goals win games. Real Oviedo must now focus on gaining enough points to finish in the top 4. It is certainly achievable!
As mentioned earlier leaders Racing won their game in a goal fest at El Molinon 5-3 against Sporting B.  2nd place Racing Ferrol also won thumping SD Logrones 6-0 with six different goal scorers. The one positive was Guijuelo’s 1-0 defeat away at Burgos, meaning Oviedo sneak above them into 3rd place in the table. Real Aviles are hot on the heels of the play offs after winning 3-1 away at bottom club Noja in the Saturday game. Ourense also kept up the pressure with a narrow 1-0 victory over Caudal Deportivo with Iker Alegre on the score sheet and Marino are also close after a 2-0 victory away at ten man Tropezon.
Elsewhere UD logrones faired better than their neighbours by beating Coruxo 1-0 at home. In the final match Celta B drew 1-1 at home to Compostela.
The league table is getting interesting as we enter the business end of the season as mentioned earlier Real Oviedo lie 3rd on 46 points. It’s incredibly tight below us though as Marino who are in 8th position are just 3 points behind, so there are likely to be many more twists and turns before the end of the season. We must make sure we are in the top 4 come the final whistle on the final day of the season.
Next week will probably be our toughest game of the season as we make the trip east to Santander to face leaders Racing. We will be roared on by 3000 fans who hopefully can cheer the team on to a famous victory.
