Oviedo edge ever closer to the title
Unbeaten run continues
Real Oviedo moved to within touching distance of the Segunda
B group one title with a 2-0 victory over Astorga in the Carlos Tartiere sunshine. The result means we are now 11 points clear
at the top of the table with just 5 games remaining. In fact top spot could be
secured next week if we win and other results go in our favour. It also means
we are 18 league games unbeaten and have now kept 5 consecutive clean sheets.
This is fantastic form and all credit must go to the players, staff and
management team.
Sergio Egea made a couple of changes to last weeks long trip
to Murcia with Dioni coming in for Hector Font who was given a well earned rest
and Dani Bautista recalled to left back after being out of the side for a few
weeks.
Linares as on many occasions this season was the hero today
grabbing both goals. The first came on 57 minutes and it was a typical poachers
finish. Sergio Garcia struck a free kick that came back off a combination of
the woodwork and Javi in the Astorga goal and there was Linares to pounce first
with an easy finish into the empty net.
Oviedo made the game safe in the 89th minute when
Linares was sent tumbling in the area by Javi. The striker picked himself up
and tucked the spot kick away to seal the points and record Oviedo their 22nd
victory of the season.
The reason we moved 11 points clear is thanks to Murcia’s
loss earlier in the day going down 1-0 at Gijon B. UD Logrones moved up to
third spot thanks to a 1-0 win away at Coruxo who seem to be sliding down the
table. Ferrol are in the last play off spot after they drew 0-0 at Valladolid
B. The only other teams who could realistically break into the top four are Guijuelo
and Compostela who are four points off the play offs. Guijuelo were 2-0 winners
over Celta B whilst Compostela beat relegation threatened Tropezon 4-2. Somozas are up to 7th place after
a 1-0 home win over Zamora whilst Real Aviles did themselves the world of good
with a much needed 2-1 win over Langreo. Burgos and Lealtad drew 0-0 on
Saturday and at the wrong end of the table Marino’s fate was finally sealed and
they were put out of their misery with relegation to the Tercera division
confirmed after a 1-0 defeat in Leon against Cultural. This was their 21st
defeat in 33 games.
Next week sees us travel for a tricky away fixture at
Zamora who are also desperate for the points but for very different reasons.
