Real Oviedo 2 Guijuelo 0

Real Oviedo make it back to back wins

Real Oviedo close gap on title rivals

Real Oviedo and Roberto Robles made it 2 wins out of 2 with a fine 2-0 victory over title rivals CD Guijuelo in the early kick off at the Carlos Tartiere. Despite last week’s win Robles rung the changes with 4 in total from last weeks team. In came Orlando, David Alba, Pardo & Ivan Rubio at the expense of Pol, Alvaro, Javi Hernandez & Hector Simon.
Both teams went into the game buoyed by the fact league leaders Racing Santander had lost yesterday by the solitary goal at Celta B so there was all to play for.
The game got off to a lively start and after just 2 minutes the home side felt they should have had a penalty after Alain was bundled over in the box by a clumsy challenge from Angel Martinez. The referee waved away the appeals though. Replays suggest it was a 50-50 call. Just 5 minutes later and again Real Oviedo were asking questions of the referee when Annunziata appeared to be tripped in the area. On this occasion though the replays showed this was a very optimistic shout.
The action just kept on coming though in the early stages and Ivan Rubio did well on the edge of the box and fed the ball through for Alain but his shot after a good touch was high and wide. Sergio Diaz was bursting forward down the left with every available opportunity and had 2 efforts, the 1st a shot from the edge of the box that was blocked and a header he failed to connect properly with from Susaeta’s deep cross.
It took till midway through the 1st half for the visitors to threaten and it was Sergio Diaz getting caught in possession by Oscar Valero, he threaded the ball through to Antonio Pino but his turn and shot was tame and easy for Orlando.
Oviedo were dominating the game though in all honesty despite as the half went on their number of chances slowed down. Alain went close on the half hour mark after good work again by Rubio but shot straight at Wilfred in the Guijuelo goal. Alain then turned provider for Sene in the last chance of the half but his goal bound shot was blocked by a defender. Despite the score line being goalless, it was a much improved performance than in recent home games and the message was surely to stay patient, keep going and the goals will come.
The 2nd half got under way and it wasn’t long before the home side again started to stamp their authority on proceedings. A quick break almost led to the opener when the influential Rubio and Sene found themselves in a 2 on 1 situation but Rubio under hit the square pass to his team mate allowing Angel Martinez to make the last ditch tackle.
The home fans didn’t have to wait long though before the opening goal arrived. On 54 minutes, Susaeta’s corner was headed out to Rubio who volleyed 1st time from 25 yards low and hard and there was Alba to stick out his foot and divert the ball past the helpless keeper. It was no more than the home side deserved and settled any anxieties the home fans might have been feeling.
The home side were far from done though as they were pressing forward for a 2nd goal to kill the game off. Annunziata drove just over the bar from the edge of the box midway through the 2nd half. As in previous home games, Real Oviedo didn’t seem to be struggling with nerves despite a few games where we have been leading until late on before conceding. We seemed far more intent on attacking and killing the game off. Substitute Sergio Rodriguez drove forward before unleashing a 25 yard daisy cutter that just fizzed past the post.
That killer goal did eventually come with 5 minutes left when Guijuelo captain totally under hit a back pass which left Sergio Garcia through on goal and he side footed confidently past the onrushing Wilfred to wrap the game up. It sparked great celebrations amongst players, staff & supporters.
Chuchi failed to grab a consolation for the visitors when he fired wildly over the bar in injury time in an effort that summed up their day.
There is a feel good factor at the moment within the club. This was only strengthened after the game when it was confirmed Roberto Robles will take charge of the team until the end of the season. This is clearly a popular decision amongst players and fans as its evident they are playing with far less fear and far more freedom. The end result is fast, positive, attacking and so far successful football.
Next week sees Los Carbayones travel for an away fixture at Zamora
